Instructions
- In a large skillet or Dutch oven, cook the hamburger (ground beef) and chopped onion over medium-high heat until the meat is browned and the onion is softened. Break up the meat as it cooks.
- Drain off any excess fat from the skillet.
- Add all the remaining ingredients (except buns) to the skillet with the meat and onions: catsup, water, green pepper, celery, lemon juice, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, salt, vinegar, prepared mustard, and black pepper (plus MSG, if using).
- Stir everything together thoroughly to combine.
- Bring the mixture to a simmer. Once simmering, reduce the heat to low, cover the skillet, and let it simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Taste and adjust seasoning (salt, pepper) if necessary.
- Serve the hot Sloppy Joe mixture spooned onto hamburger buns.
