CupOnion, chopped
7 ozCatsup (Ketchup)
CupWater
CupGreen Pepper, finely chopped
CupCelery, finely chopped
CupLemon Juice (~2 Tbsp)
1 TbspBrown Sugar
1 TbspWorcestershire Sauce
tspSalt (originally Tbsp)
1 TbspVinegar
tspPrepared Mustard (orig. Tbsp)
To tasteBlack Pepper
1 TbspMSG (Optional)
Hamburger Buns (for serving)

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet or Dutch oven, cook the hamburger (ground beef) and chopped onion over medium-high heat until the meat is browned and the onion is softened. Break up the meat as it cooks.
  2. Drain off any excess fat from the skillet.
  3. Add all the remaining ingredients (except buns) to the skillet with the meat and onions: catsup, water, green pepper, celery, lemon juice, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, salt, vinegar, prepared mustard, and black pepper (plus MSG, if using).
  4. Stir everything together thoroughly to combine.
  5. Bring the mixture to a simmer. Once simmering, reduce the heat to low, cover the skillet, and let it simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  6. Taste and adjust seasoning (salt, pepper) if necessary.
  7. Serve the hot Sloppy Joe mixture spooned onto hamburger buns.
