1 canSweetened Condensed Milk (e.g., Eagle Brand)
1 barDark Chocolate (e.g., Hershey’s, approx 4 oz)
CupTap Water
1 (9-inch)Baked Pie Shell
OptionalWhipped Cream (for topping)
OptionalExtra Dark Chocolate (for shaving)

Instructions

  1. Break the dark chocolate bar into smaller pieces.
  2. Place the chocolate pieces in a medium saucepan and melt over low heat, stirring occasionally until smooth. (Alternatively, use a double boiler).
  3. Once the chocolate is melted, add the entire can of sweetened condensed milk.
  4. Cook the mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly. Continue cooking and stirring until the mixture thickens and becomes lumpy (as described in the original recipe).
  5. As soon as the mixture becomes lumpy, remove the saucepan from the heat.
  6. Immediately pour in the cup of tap water.
  7. Stir the mixture vigorously until it becomes smooth.
  8. Pour the smooth chocolate filling into the pre-baked 9-inch pie shell.
  9. Chill the pie in the refrigerator for several hours, or until the filling is completely set.
  10. Top with whipped cream before serving, if desired.
  11. Optional Decoration: You can decorate the top with shavings of dark chocolate just before serving.
