Instructions

  1. Heat oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Blend together cup shortening, 1 teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon grated lemon rind, and 1 cup sugar.
  3. Beat in 1 unbeaten egg and 2 tablespoons milk.
  4. Stir in 2 cups flour, 1 teaspoon baking powder, and teaspoon soda.
  5. Drop by rounded teaspoonfuls on a lightly greased baking sheet.
  6. Grease the bottom of a glass. Dip the glass in sugar and use it to flatten each cookie.
  7. Sprinkle cookies with nutmeg.
  8. Bake for 8-10 minutes at 400°F (200°C), or until light golden.
  9. Cool on a rack.
