2 CakesYeast
2 1/2 CupsLukewarm Water
2 TBLSHoney
1 TBLSSalt
2 TBLSMelted Shortening or Salad Oil
7 to 8 CupsFlour

Instructions

  1. Sprinkle yeast on lukewarm water in a large mixing bowl.
  2. Add Honey, let stand for 5 minutes.
  3. Mix until yeast is dissolved.
  4. Add salt, shortening, and 3 cups of flour.
  5. Mix thoroughly with an electric mixer.
  6. Mix in 3 more cups of flour.
  7. Sprinkle 1 cup of flour on the board.
  8. Turn out dough onto the board.
  9. Knead until smooth (about 5 min).
  10. Add more flour if necessary.
  11. Place dough in a greased bowl, turn to grease the top.
  12. Cover and let rise in a warm place until double in bulk (1 to 1 1/2 hours).
  13. Punch dough down and divide in half.
  14. Shape roll portion of dough on a floured board into a circle about 10 inches in diameter.
  15. Grasp edge and roll tightly, similar to a jelly roll.
  16. Place on a baking sheet sprinkled with cornmeal.
  17. Bake at 375° for about 30 minutes.
